All of us have a story to tell and a legacy to leave. Below are inspiring stories of faithful supporters like you. Each has included World Vision in their estate plan so they can continue to support World Vision after their lifetime - it's their legacy of love to the world's children.
Part of the World Vision family since 1983
Gerry Knipfel has spent his life investing in children-first teaching elementary school, and then high school. Today, he is a private tutor, working with about 20 students a week. He is also helping kids around the world as a World Vision child sponsor. "I started with one child, and now it's up to 15," says Gerry. He tries to sponsor another child every year.
Gerry chose to become a sponsor through World Vision after reading a survey that ranked it among the top charitable organizations in the world. "I found that with World Vision, a greater amount goes to needs all over the world," he explains. Ensuring that his gifts were being put to good use was important to Gerry.
Today, he gets to see the impact he's making through correspondence with his sponsored children. He also shares that experience with his grandkids, who write letters to a few of the children whose birthdays fall close to their own. "My daughter says this is the best thing I have ever done for them-to help make them aware of children in need," shares Gerry. "This has become a multigenerational thing."
Sponsorship isn't the only way Gerry is investing in kids. He also made donations to help World Vision build wells in Niger. "I wanted to do something bigger than sponsorship," he says.
And that's exactly what Gerry did when he decided to make helping kids a lasting part of his legacy. After watching a wealthy uncle die a few years back, it hit Gerry that his possessions won't follow him to the grave. "I realized that I can't take my money with me," he reflects. "But I can leave it to a good cause."
Gerry spoke with a World Vision gift planning director and learned about his options. "I got all the information and decided that including World Vision in my will was a great idea," he explains. "So, I updated it to include World Vision."
Now, Gerry can leave the legacy he desires and continue helping kids beyond his lifetime. "I know my sponsored children will be taken care of upon my death," he shares. "It makes me feel secure that I can leave this earth knowing I did something positive for people I will never meet."
